OUR REASONS FOR ADOPTING

Kenny’s Story
Two weeks.  I have two weeks off during the Christmas holidays.  This has been such a blessing this year, because this year, Thanksgiving Day to be exact, Adam and I have decided to walk through the unknown and adopt a child.  These past two weeks we have spent hours filling out the application, answering theological questions, scheduling “serious” family pictures, and cleaning out the front room as a precursor to our future home study.  So many preparations!  During this Christmas, peace has reigned in my heart.  Call me old school, but one thing I always think about at Christmas time is Handel’s Messiah.  I remember hearing this performed many times growing up and it is a performance that takes you along the journey of THE most important story in all of history…. God’s story.  My two favorite pieces are “For unto us a Child is born” and “Hallelujah”
For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.  Isaiah 9:6
Hallelujah!  For the Lord God omnipotent Reigneth. Revelation 11:15. . . the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ: and He shall reign forever and ever.  Revelation 19:16. . . . KING OF KINGS, LORD OF LORDS.

Wow, this gets me every time I hear it.  I just jump on good ole youtube and there it is.  It reminds me of my undergraduate days when I studied opera and vocal performance.  Yes, you can be shocked.  I actually studied classical voice.  “And the government shall be upon HIS shoulders!”  What assurance we have in the scriptures!
This year has been an interesting year.  Adam and I have been walking through our “child” journey for about 5 ½ years.  We just celebrated our 8 year wedding anniversary on December 20th.  Yet another reason I love this season so much!  It was while I was studying Vocology in Denver in the summer of 2005, and Adam was helping with a church plant in Nashville, that we separately heard from the Lord that He wanted us to be parents.  That was a huge deal, because before then, we were not too keen on this whole idea.  So began our journey.  After years of doctors, surgeries, procedures, some “failed” adoption opportunities, and the heartbreak of our miscarriage, we began to see that this was not the way God wanted to make the “parent thing” happen.  At least not now.  Along came Kenny.  THE most amazing African American baby boy who was born on Valentine’s Day and was about 8 months when we met him.  Adam and I had talked about Foster Care and I approached Lisa Medlock one Sunday after church.  She and her husband Parks have taken in so many foster children and I asked her some questions about foster care and if they would ever consider taken in infants to foster.  About a year ago, Lisa said to me that she felt like God would bring a foster child to their care that would one day be our child.  When people approach me with such bold statements, I listen.  There are no accidents with God.  So the day after I asked Lisa about foster care, she got a call that an infant needed a home.  Kenny came into our lives and created a stir and bond with me and my husband.  After loving on him for a month and ½, he did not go up for adoption, and a family member adopted him.  Oh, it was so hard to let him go, and it was hard to see what God was doing with our heartstrings.  We LOVED this kid.  Now, we see that Kenny’s story has brought us to the place that we know that God wants us to adopt.  Who knew we could love something so much that was not our own!  God showed us this through Kenny and through the Medlocks.  We are forever grateful for the Medlocks and the sacrifice they would have made to see that Kenny could one day be ours.  Thank you, Lisa and Parks; and thank you, Kenny.
υἱοθεσία : “to place as a son” is the Greek word that means adoption and is only mentioned in the Bible 5 times.  Spiritual adoption: the Christian becomes a permanent member of the family of God, because he is forever sealed in Christ (Eph. 1:13), and has a guaranteed hope (2 Cor. 1:22; 5:5; Eph. 1:14; NIV, ESV)
We are permanently sealed with a guaranteed hope.  Thank you Jesus for saving me!  Thank you to those that have already invested financially towards our precious one.  Pray for us to have patience and faith that He will continue to provide financially.  Pray for us as God takes us through this journey of adopting a son or daughter into our family…permanently sealed with hope.
